Intern - Land Use, Forests and Ecosystems

Introduction
The Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest dedicated multilateral climate fund and invests in impactful, innovative, catalytic programs and projects in developing countries across the globe. The GCF has a portfolio of 286 projects across 133 countries, with a total commitment of USD 15.9 billion to date.

Internship Assignment 

The Intern will provide operational and administrative support to the Department of Asia and the Pacific (DAPAC). S/he will have the opportunity to learn and expand her/his experiences by providing assistance in the Programming and the management of the GCFs project portfolio. The Intern will report to the Land Use, Forests and Ecosystems Senior Specialist and will also work closely with other relevant personnel throughout the GCF Secretariat.

Under the overall guidance of the Land Use, Forests and Ecosystems Senior Specialist within the Division of Asia Pacific (DAPAC), the Intern is expected to:

• Conduct analysis of GCF’s portfolio of projects and programmes in the forest, land use and ecosystem services sectors to develop lessons for enhancing the consistency and effectiveness of approaches to achieving climate impact.  Topics potentially include:
  • Calculation of ex-ante mitigation impact estimates and reporting of ex-post mitigation results
  • Calculation of ex-ante adaptation impact estimates and reporting of ex-post adaptation results
  • Efficiency and effectiveness of measures to achieve mitigation and adaptation impacts through GCF investments in specific ecosystems and land use categories (e.g. forest, agriculture, coastal, pastureland, island)
  • Use of remote sensing approaches in project planning, management, reporting, M&E
  • Review of potential approaches to the use of indicators for ecosystem-based adaptation and forest and landscape restoration
• Develop materials for communication of lessons from the land use, forest and ecosystem services portfolio for internal and external audiences
• Support the review and revision of guidance materials on REDD+ readiness, implementation and results-based payments for internal and external audiences
• Support the development of knowledge on the relevance and potential application of voluntary and compliance carbon markets in the context of GCF projects and programmes, with specific reference to Article 6 transactions
• Assists in administrative tasks (i.e. organizing meetings, preparing minutes and briefs for internal and external meetings) and the preparation of PowerPoint presentations, including presentations for Events/ Meetings and other programming needs, as appropriate.

Requirements and qualifications

• Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master’s or PhD program in natural resource management, remote sensing, sustainable development, climate change, development economics or related fields; 
• Familiarity with open source remote sensing / GIS applications (ArcGIS, QGIS, eCognition etc) and their use in project cycle management;
• Knowledge and experience with working with developing country governments, development partners including the UN, IFIs, and/or MDBs is an advantage; 
• Good understanding and experience in operations of international organization is an added advantage;
• Proficiency in using standard software programs: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access;
• Excellent writing and presentation skills;
• Fluency in English is essential.
