The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the world’s largest multilateral climate fund, established to support developing countries in their pursuit of sustainable, low-emission, and climate-resilient growth. The GCF’s Department of Strategic Investment Partnerships and Co-Investments (DSCI) plays a pivotal role in driving innovative approaches to mobilize private and public sector finance for impactful climate projects, advancing the Fund’s 50 by 30 vision.

To achieve its objectives, DSCI is actively building partnerships with a diverse set of stakeholders, including private and public sector entities. The department is spearheading initiatives to introduce innovative structures and solutions to unlock transformational capital flows and address regional and sector-specific climate challenges.

The DSCI seeks to engage a consultant with a background in private equity, investment banking, or asset management, to contribute to its strategic initiatives. The consultant will assist in identifying and developing partnerships, structuring innovative financing vehicles, and advancing programming initiatives aligned with GCF priorities. The consultant will join DSCI team on Remote basis. The assignment is for an initial 90 days over a 6-months period.

 

Role

The Consultant will collaborate with the DSCI team, internal stakeholders, and external partners to identify, structure, and implement initiatives that mobilize capital for climate finance. This role will be pivotal in advancing DSCI’s strategic objectives through targeted outreach, financial modeling, and partnership development.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Consultant will report to the Director of DSCI and will collaborate within DSCI, internal teams and external partners to undertake the following tasks:

Outreach and Partnership Development:

  • In coordination with DSCI team at the GCF Secretariat, identify and engage with potential partners at local / national / regional levels, including private investment firms, sovereign wealth funds, DFIs/MDBs, pension funds, and institutional investors;
  • Explore and structure opportunities for co-investment with GCF, focusing on scalable and innovative financing solutions; 
  • Represent DSCI in negotiations and discussions to align partner objectives with GCF’s climate finance priorities.

Internal Support and Coordination:

  • Support the DSCI team in recording and documenting outreach activities, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of partner engagements;
  • Track ongoing discussions, partnership progress, and follow-up actions to ensure alignment with GCF’s strategic goals;
  • Collaborate with regional desks and the Private Sector Facility team to integrate external engagements with GCF’s operational priorities.

Deal Execution, Financial Modeling and Analysis:

  • Lead and manage the execution of climate investment projects requiring the use of different financial instruments including equity, debt, mezzanine structures and guarantees;
  • Conduct due diligence and risk assessment for potential transactions;
  • Develop and refine financial models to support co-investment platforms and other financing initiatives;
  • Conduct in-depth financial analysis to evaluate the feasibility and impact of proposed co-investment platforms, including blended finance mechanisms;
  • Provide data-driven insights to inform strategic decision-making and align initiatives with GCF’s goals.

Deliverables

The Consultant is expected to deliver:

  • Tangible investment and partnership opportunities from the region of focus;
  • Financial models to evaluate co-investment platforms and financing opportunities, aligned with GCF priorities;
  • Comprehensive list of new partners engaged, including an analysis of co-investment opportunities;
  • A centralized tracker documenting partner engagements, key insights, and actionable next steps.

 

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, or a related field;
  • Master’s (7 years) or Bachelor’s (9 years) experience of experience in private equity, investment banking, or asset management, with demonstrated expertise in structuring and executing investments;
  • Strong knowledge of capital markets, blended finance, and climate-focused investment mechanisms;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including financial institutions, development banks, and private sector entities;
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and presentation skills; 
  • Experience in emerging markets or climate-related investments would be an advantage.

Duration and Location

  • The assignment is for an initial 6-month period, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs.
